📋 Before You Start
- ✓WeUpsell – AI Upsell & Cross Sell is installed.
- ✓Your Shopify products are synced with WeUpsell.
- ✓The WeUpsell Theme Extension is enabled in your storefront theme.
1Step 1: Open the Cart Upsell Template
To create your Cart Drawer Upsell:
- Open your Shopify Admin.
- Go to Apps → AI Upsell by WeUpsell.
- Click Templates.
- Under Upsell & Recommendation, select Custom Cart Drawer.
This opens the Cart Drawer editor where you can design your AI recommendation block.
2Step 2: Customize Your Cart Drawer
Inside the editor, you can customize every element shown in the cart. Available sections include:
- Cart Title
- Close Button
- Divider
- Tiered Rewards
- Cart Items
- "You may also like" heading
- AI Product Recommendation block
- Discount Code
- Order Note
Use the live preview on the right to instantly see how the cart drawer will appear to customers.
Tip: Keep the recommendation section below the cart items so customers review their cart first before discovering suggested products.
3Step 3: Configure AI Product Recommendations
Select the Upsell → Product block from the left sidebar to configure how recommendations are generated.
Products to offer: Choose your recommendation source, such as:
- Recommended by WeUpsell AI (Related Products) (Recommended)
- Related Products
- Complementary Products
- Manual Product Selection
You can also configure: Number of products to display, Product link behavior, and whether to Open the product page in a new or current tab.
4Step 4: Configure Display Conditions
Click Next to open the Conditions section. From here you can configure:
- Pages: Choose whether the Cart Upsell appears on all pages or only on selected pages. (Most merchants should leave Display on all pages enabled).
- Trigger: Configure when the cart drawer recommendation should appear.
- Display Schedule: Optionally schedule when the upsell campaign starts or ends.
5Step 5: Save & Publish
Once you've finished configuring the design and conditions:
- Click Save & Publish in the top-right corner.
- Wait for the success confirmation popup.
Your AI Cart Upsell is now live on your Shopify store.
6Step 6: Test the Cart Upsell
Visit your storefront and perform a quick test to verify implementation:
- Add any product to your cart.
- Open the cart drawer.
- Verify that recommendations display properly.
✓ Verify Your Setup
- ✓AI recommendations appear.
- ✓Product images display correctly.
- ✓Prices are correct and update automatically.
- ✓Clicking Add adds the product directly to the cart drawer without page refresh.
- ✓Recommended products are relevant to the cart contents.
🛠️ Troubleshooting
AI recommendations aren't appearing.
Check that the template has been Save & Published, AI recommendations are selected under Products to offer, and your store products have synced successfully with WeUpsell.
The Cart Upsell isn't visible on the storefront.
Verify that the WeUpsell Theme Extension is enabled in your active Shopify theme settings, display conditions allow the template to appear, and you're testing on a page where the cart drawer is enabled.
Changes don't appear after publishing.
Click Save & Publish again, refresh your storefront, clear your browser cache, or test using an incognito window.
💡 Best Practices
- •Display 3–5 recommended products for the best user experience.
- •Use WeUpsell AI (Related Products) for the most relevant, automated recommendations.
- •Keep the upsell section directly below the cart items so customers can easily review their selected items first.
- •Avoid showing too many recommendations, which can make the cart drawer feel cluttered and decrease checkout conversions.
